Slate Jewellery- How it's made
Perryn's Cave Art
Designer Slate Jewellery from Wales
The Maker
Perryn Butler is a respected Welsh sculptor and understands how to work with stone which she has been carving for twenty five years. (Images on rest of website) She has become interested in slate and has begun to make jewellery out of it. Slate is a challenging material to work in as it is hard and difficult to carve and because it has a surface texture and fossils, it is very laborious to polish.
How are they Made?
Each piece is made completely by hand, first it is cut out with a coping saw and then rough edges taken off by filing and then she uses nine grades of abrasives to achieve the polish, and they do feel wonderful and smooth.
Why Slate
Slate is the backbone of Wales and is millions of years old and visitors could feel that they were taking a piece of the land away with them, because they are made out of Welsh material in Wales by a Welsh artist they have appeal to tourists as well as people from your locality.
Design
Perryn has been interested and studied ancient cultures as well as our own Celtic heritage for many years and this knowledge and experience is now coming out into a series of very different and unique designs for both men and women who can be assured that they are wearing a little piece of art.
Continuity
The designs will vary slightly and evolve all the time because each piece of slate will have a different grain and they are made by hand. However they will all have the same quality and attention to detail as the ones in the photographs. For example the fish are all slightly different which makes them unique. The discs are evolving into having designs upon them and Perryn is learning silver smithing to have alternative ways of hanging necklaces with silver chains instead of chords. These will be available soon.

Perryn spent years working in acute mental health using relaxation and meditation as a daily therapy and noted the improvement in all people by regular practice. She has also trained in life coaching in her spare time, which is all about honing your goals.
